It measures 37 centimetres in length and weighs around 277 grams.
It has a pointed, bony spur 1 centimetre long at the meeting of the wings, a black stripe from the neck to the chest and long feathers on the back of the head; it has an eye-catching design of black, white and grey in its plumage. The iris and legs are reddish. The spur is shown to rivals or enemies with a lift of the wing or during flight.
