Although other insects of their weight would sink, water striders can stand or run on the water surface. Why? They have thousands of tiny water-resistant hairs on their feet. This pushes them upwards from the water, keeping them on top of the surface. The high surface tension of water helps them balance as well. They paddle around using their long middle legs.
