In The Balkans, love is not something that can be displayed openly - quite the opposite. If a boy liked a girl and wanted to marry her, he should send a relative (an aunt, or another female relative) to check her skills. If the girl showed to be skillful and worthy, only then the boy's parents would step in to start the marriage bargain. In those days it was unthinkable for the boy to go and ask for the hand of his chosen one.
