The araucaria or pehuén, is an arboreal species belonging to the Araucaria coniferous genus of the Araucariaceae family. It is an endemic tree species of the Pehuén district of the sub-Antarctic forests, in the extreme northwest of Argentine Patagonia, mainly in the north-central mountain range of the Neuquén province, and in south-central Chile.
A tree used as a symbol of the native peoples of central and southern Chile, the Araucaria grows slowly and has great longevity, being able to exceed 1,600 years and measuring around 50 meters. Moreover, it reaches its reproductive maturity between 100 and 300 years of life, giving its tasty fruit to those close to it: Piñon (the pine nut), an edible seed that the Pehuenches (natives) used as the basis of their diet.
In the photograph we can see the ancient araucaria trees, the Southern Cross and the Milky Way emerging between them.
