The firefly family comprises over 2,000 known species of beetles, almost all of which produce light. As predators of herbaceous and shrubby vegetation, these insects play an important role in nature, limiting the proliferation of caterpillars, snails and slugs. Fireflies are in decline almost everywhere in the world, probably due to a combination of factors such as the use of insecticides, light pollution and climate change.
